How Should Men Choose Dating Photos? Headshot, Half-Body, and Lifestyle Shots

Good dating photos look clear, clean, and lived-in. How headshots, half-body shots, and lifestyle images work together, plus outfit, location, timing, pose, and communication tips.

For men, good dating photos are less about looking handsome and more about looking clear, clean, and easy to spend time with. A headshot should make you instantly recognizable. A half-body shot should show your build and everyday style. One or two lifestyle shots should help someone imagine spending time with you. Three photos with clear roles work better than ten similar selfies. Alan Photography is a one-person outdoor portrait service in Tokyo, photographed one-on-one by Alan. Before the shoot, we discuss the purpose and the feeling you want to keep, from a natural practical look to a more cinematic style. Sessions take place in real outdoor settings with Tokyo streets, buildings, and natural light, and Alan guides movement, expression, and gaze on site. Think of the combination this way. For the headshot, choose one image where your face is clear and your eyes look natural, with a clean background. For the half-body shot, choose one that shows your height, proportions, and usual outfit, with relaxed hands and shoulders. For lifestyle images, choose moments with context, such as walking, drinking coffee, looking ahead, or sitting for a rest. Keep the hairstyle and overall impression consistent across the set. Avoid heavy filters or edits that make you unrecognizable. Retouching stays natural. A five-part checklist helps. Outfit: clean, well-fitting clothes, one casual and one slightly smarter option, with clean shoes. Location: tidy streets, architectural lines, or park greenery, avoiding cluttered backgrounds. Timing: around 09:00 for soft, fresh light and around 14:00 for stronger shape and shadow. In summer, use shade and hydration. In winter, dress warmly. Poses: relaxed shoulders, natural hands, walking, or looking back, with guidance on the day. Communication in Chinese, Japanese, and English is welcome. Please share your purpose, privacy needs, and angles you prefer to avoid. On the day, we walk and photograph at an easy pace while Alan suggests positions and light direction. Afterward Alan handles photo selection and basic color adjustment, with natural retouching according to your plan and respect for recognizability. Hair, makeup, and clothing are prepared by you or arranged for an additional fee. Video, albums, and posters are not included. Common questions. What if I am not good at smiling? You do not need to smile all the time. A light smile or a calm, relaxed expression is enough. Will my photos be published? You can request that your work remain completely private. Will retouching change how I look? No. We keep selection, basic color work, and plan-based natural retouching only. Can I shoot if I have prepared nothing? Yes. Share your purpose and preferred feeling, and we can sort out outfit and location direction together. Start by deciding the first impression you want to give, then tell that story with a headshot, half-body shot, and lifestyle images. Share your ideas with Alan, take a walk through Tokyo on the day, and sincere photos will follow.
