Still Using a Three-Year-Old Profile Photo? Get a New One Before the Year Ends

When was the last time you updated your profile photo? How to decide on the purpose, style, and outfit — and how to book an outdoor portrait session in Tokyo that actually goes smoothly.
Here's the short answer: if your profile photo is more than a year old, or your hair and overall look have changed a lot since it was taken, it's time for a new one. It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be you, now.
Honestly, most people aren't avoiding it — they just don't know where to start. Purpose, style, outfit, booking: get these in order and the rest falls into place.
First, Decide: Where Will This Photo Live?
The purpose of the photo decides everything after it. Before the shoot, ask yourself three questions:
- Where will it be used? A social media avatar, a dating app, a professional bio page — or simply a portrait of who you are right now?
- What impression do you want? Warm and approachable, or polished and professional? The expression and outfit are completely different for each.
- Portrait or landscape? Avatars get cropped into squares or circles, so it's worth leaving room in the composition.
Once the purpose is clear, you won't be standing there on shoot day wondering whether to smile.
Shooting Outdoors vs. Doing It Yourself
A phone selfie is convenient, but there are two things you can't easily do alone.
The first is light. Natural outdoor light — especially in the late afternoon — renders skin and mood in a way indoor lighting can't match. The second is having someone watch you. When you shoot alone, you're stuck guessing "is this okay?" The whole time. When someone guides you, you just follow along.
And not knowing how to pose is genuinely not a problem. Starting from simple standing and walking, the photographer demonstrates each movement and you mirror it. Many first-timers are surprised halfway through: "Oh, I can actually look like this."
Outfit: Wear Something That Feels Like You
The most common mistake with profile photos is thinking you need to dress like a model. It's the opposite: wear the outfit you feel most comfortable and most yourself in.
A few practical rules:
- Solid colors beat busy patterns — they keep the focus on your face.
- Fit matters most. Too loose or too tight gets amplified in photos.
- Bring a backup outfit so you can decide on the day based on the light and mood.
- Shooting between late October and December? Layer for warmth — the coat itself can be part of the look.
Hair and makeup are usually up to you; come as you like to look. If you'd like help finding a stylist or a kimono shop, mention it in advance and the photographer will check feasibility and cost with you.
Three Days Before: Send These to the Photographer
Half of a smooth shoot is decided in advance communication. Prepare these three things and send them over:
- The photo's purpose (avatar, profile page, etc.).
- Two or three reference photos you like, with a note on what you like about them.
- Anything you'd rather avoid (no toothy smiles, a bad angle, etc.).
You can also voluntarily share your own photos or social accounts to help the photographer get a sense of you — completely optional, never required.
Booking Around Year-End
December is peak season in Tokyo — illuminations, crowds, the holidays all land here. If you want new photos before the year ends, apply two to three weeks ahead for the best choice of dates.
A few practical things to know in advance:
- No deposit. You pay in Japanese yen cash, on site, after the shoot.
- After you apply, the photographer confirms the date, details, and quote. An application is not a confirmed booking.
- Delivery is color-graded JPGs; you then select a set number for retouching.
- If photos will be published anywhere, your consent is confirmed first.

FAQ
I really can't pose at all. Is that okay?
Yes — that's literally the photographer's job. Starting from simple standing and walking, each movement is demonstrated for you to mirror.
How long until I get the photos?
Delivery is color-graded JPGs, and retouching starts from the photos you select. Times and counts vary by plan; the services page has the details.
Can I ask that my photos not be published?
Of course. Whether and where photos are published is always confirmed with you first — nothing is used without your agreement.
Next Step
Open your social profile and take a look: is that avatar still you? If not, give yourself a shoot before the year ends. Start by checking the available dates and pick a day when you'll be at your best.
